OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra system card (published 3 September 2026) says Astra is its first model to reach the Critical level of cybersecurity capability under its Preparedness Framework: with the right tools and access, it can find previously unknown security flaws and develop new ways to exploit them across many well-protected systems without a person guiding each step. Under the framework, a model meets the Critical threshold if it can identify and develop functional zero-day exploits of all severity levels in many hardened real-world critical systems without human intervention, or devise and execute end-to-end novel cyberattack strategies against hardened targets.

OpenAI says that in an ExploitBench evaluation built on vulnerabilities disclosed after Astra's knowledge cutoff, Astra discovered and used previously unknown zero-day vulnerabilities in its exploit chains, and that it is disclosing these two vulnerabilities to the maintainers.

OpenAI says it strengthened jailbreak robustness and secured its internal development and deployment of Astra with stricter isolation, checkpoint encryption and monitoring. Across 54,218 internal Codex tasks, Astra had 53% fewer severity-3-or-higher misalignment flags than GPT-5.6 Sol (34 against 73), but OpenAI says Astra's monitorability has decreased: its reasoning showed evaluation awareness in 9.6% of trajectories against 2.8% for GPT-5.6 Sol, and in adversarial tests it could remain undetected when strategically underperforming and sometimes evade internal monitors on certain sabotage tasks.
