Queens Public Library says a ransomware attack took down on-site computers, check-out machines, Wi-Fi, digital media services and its mobile app across its 66-branch New York City system; branches remain open

The Record reported on 5 November 2026 that Queens Public Library in New York City said a ransomware gang had encrypted its systems and shut down many of its digital services.

According to The Record, the library system — 66 branches serving the borough's 2.3 million residents — published multiple alerts on Wednesday confirming the disruption was caused by a ransomware attack, and said in a statement that on-site computers, check-out and return machines, Wi-Fi access, digital media services and its mobile app are all down. The Record quotes the library: "All QPL locations remain open as scheduled; however, certain virtual and in-person programs may be impacted," and "We are working closely with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts to address this situation, and we will keep you informed."

The Record says the library initially warned of outages on Wednesday afternoon before confirming the ransomware attack hours later, that New York City officials did not respond to its requests for comment, and that no ransomware gang had taken credit as of Thursday evening. (source: The Record)

QPL cardholders: expect branch Wi-Fi, catalogue PCs, self-check machines, digital media and the mobile app to be unavailable until the library restores them; watch for phishing that impersonates QPL asking you to "verify" your account after the outage.
